TEDxBRACU "Countdown" held
BRAC University students have organised TEDxBRACU "Countdown" virtually on 10 December 2021. It aimed to disseminate possible climate change solutions and highlight exceptional changemakers actively working in environmental sustainability from a local perspective. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Dave Dowland, the Registrar of BRAC University. The virtual event had over 400 registered participants along with a wonderful music session featured by Syeda Farhat Tarannum.
Speakers at the event included Dr. Saleemul Huq, the Director of International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and Senior Associate of International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Dr. Sebastian Groh, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Management, BRAC University and CEO and Co-founder of ME SOLshare Ltd., Ms. Farhana Sultana, Assistant Scientist at icddr,b, Ms. Sinyat Ahmed, the founder of Reach Community BD and Mr. Masuba Aaron, the founder of Clivi-Scope.
Adapting to climate change for long, Bangladesh bears potential in sharing its knowledge on tackling natural disasters to help other countries, said leading climate expert Dr. Saleemul Huq at the event. Climate change has a much more devastating impact than predicted by scientists and the coming years will be very different, bringing unexpected and serious problems, said the director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development. Climate change will affect every country and so adequate preparation and adaptation needs to be undertaken, he said. Dr. Huq also urged the young generation to find solutions and lead the world in the battle against the global countdown.
"Wouldn't it be remarkable if a country considered among the most vulnerable to climate change - such as Bangladesh, would be really leading the way to fight it?" asked Dr. Sebastian Groh, an Associate Professor of BRAC University's Graduate School of Management. According to him, 5Ds fuel the energy future -- Decentralization, Decarburization, Disruption, Democratization and Digitization. Dr. Groh spoke on ME SOLshare Ltd, which he co-founded, explaining how it uniquely uses interconnected solar panels to balance constant production and consumption of energy.
A student of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Masuba Aaron, also founder of Clivi-Scope, shared his ideas on dealing with climate change through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Aaron stated that when it comes to climate change, context is important and solutions need to be customized. He also stressed that the engagement of communities was crucial to achieve resilience against climate change.
Farhana Sultana, Assistant Scientist at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, presented her ideas on "Sultana Washer and Dryer Bags". The environmentally friendly product meets menstrual hygiene needs in a sustainable manner. As stated by Ms Farhana, individuals are free to choose between the options of using non-biodegradable or biodegradable menstrual products, but the choice should be an informed one.
